Is there a home remedy to help housebreak a puppy?
Puppies are like children and thrive on routine and schedule. Housebreaking a puppy is really a lesson in disciplining yourself. First, it’s necessary that you feed the puppy only at certain times of day. I find that twice a day is best. Take the puppy to the area where you want him to eliminate about 10 minutes after he eats – immediately after he drinks water – when he wakes up from a nap and immediately after he has exercised. Praise him lavishly when he eliminates outside. Pay attention to his signals and respond as soon as he ‘asks’ to go out. At first, the process will be a matter of doing the same thing day in and day out. After a couple of weeks, if you stick to this schedule, you’ll recognize the puppy’s method of asking to go out. NEVER scold a puppy for eliminating in the house. It will only confuse them. When accidents do happen inside the house, clean the area – then spray it with straight white vinegar to neutralize the odor.
