Effective for cost reporting periods ending on or after June 30, 1997, providers submitting their cost reports prior to the due date (five months after the end of the cost reporting period), and whose cost report has been subsequently rejected, have the benefit of a grace period equal to the difference between the number of days the cost report was filed early and the end of the required due date of the cost report. This applies to Hard Copy submissions (e.g. Home Office), as well as electronic submissions. This one time grace period is based on the date the fiscal intermediary receives the cost report and not the postmark date. From the date the provider receives the notice of rejection, the provider is given the grace period to resolve the reason for rejection and resubmit the cost report.
