Is there a glass ceiling for Mohawk Valley women?

July 29, 2009 — During World War II, as more and more men were sent off to war, women in the workforce became a necessity. Women had to work to not only feed their children, but to keep The United States productive…and it was women who kept the factories producing and kept the country afloat through that difficult time. At that time, there was no argument about where a woman belonged, because there was no choice. But as the war ended, and the soldiers came home to work, many women were sent back to their housewife roles. Others remained in the workforce, but almost always landed the tradition “women” jobs such a telephone operators, secretaries, nurses and school teachers. Today, women comprise just about half of American’s workers. The U.S. Census found that in 2000, 47.9 percent of women in the Mohawk Valley were working, versus 52.1 percent of men. Despite the efforts of the followers of Rosie the Riveter, a stigma still remains for some that a woman’s place is in the home. Lisa
