Is there a genetic basis to drug resistance in schistosomiasis?
Low cure rates using praziquantel have been observed in some areas of the Senegal River Basin. Ongoing research is investigating whether genetic diversity in the parasite might explain this observation. Recent data, however, suggest that the observed treatment failures are more likely to be the result of particularly intense transmission.
