The Kangas Sound Editor http://www.kangasound.com can be downloaded for free, although it isn’t very much like CUBASE. It provides an alternative method of composing music, constructing harmonic/inharmonic instruments, sounds, chord and repetition groups and sequences using boxes/cells which are placed into track Edit views using drag n’ drop, and then assigned properties such as volume and pitch. Multiple tracks can then be combined into a composition.
