Is there a facial expression that signifies envy?
Actually, yes; if there were no facial expression for envy, we would not be able to identify envy in the way that people look at each other, and we can. Although it is a subtle expression, it is usually typified by a tightening of the muscles under the eyes and around the mouth, resulting in slightly narrowed eyes and “thinner” lips.
Yes and No. In truth, when one is feeling envy, their face is usually blank. Their face reacts (if one is smiling and then turns a corner to see their love in another’s arms, their face drops to a blank) but there is no “expression” more the unexpression. This is typically how you can tell is someone is feeling envy. First their mind goes blank, they have just lost some grip of what’s going on around them. Then they make an attempt to hold onto their pride by showing no reaction, and this lack of reaction can be noticed if you’re keen. Their eyes may dart, usually in confusion or to open their line of sight and “push back” the world that feels like it’s cornering them. Basically, the stir of chemicals in their brain spurs a need to hide how they are feeling, and hence their face shows no expression.
