Is there a difference between the Psychotherapy provided by a Clinical Social, Psychologist or a Psychiatrist?

0

In a 1986 publication by William Schofield, M.D.,The Purchase Of Friendship, a study is referenced in which a group of Professional Psychologists, Psychiatrists and Clinical Social Workers were audio taped conducting psychotherapy with patients. These recordings were reviewed by another group of Professional Psychotherapists representing the same three disciplines asking that they identify the providers by discipline. In this test and similar tests, it was impossible to tell if the provider was a Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker or Psychiatrist. However, it was possible to identify the theoretical orientation being used by the Psychotherapist in each session.

Therefore, if the need is for talking psychotherapy, is needed, either of the three traditional providers can be trusted to provide the same level of treatment.
