Is there a difference between Jasmine rice and Basmanti rice?
First off, if we are talking about “genuine” basmanti and jasmine rice, basmanti rice comes from India while jasmine comes from Thailand. Of course, each variety has U.S. “knockoff” versions. In terms of cooking, the consistency of the rices will differ but the aroma and taste will probably be similar. Basmanti rice will come out dry and fluffy with separate grains. Jasmine will come out moist and and sticky. Both, however, have been described as having an aroma like roasted nuts or popcorn. Nutrition information for both rices is similar: 1/4 cup of both varieties will have about 180 calories and less than a gram of fat.
