Is there a difference between intermittent exotropia and exophoria?
Technically, exotropia is never intermittent. It is a permanent outward deviation of one or both eyes. A “tropia” is a permanent condition that is correctable only with surgical treatment. Exophoria is an “intermittent” deviation of one or both eyes. In a phoria, the eyes have a tendency to deviate, but are able to aim “straight.” Lenses with “prism” may be needed to compensate, but many people have extraocular muscles that are strong enough to pull the eye(s) inward.
