Is there a difference between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are the same. The late Carlos Gracie Sr. learned Kano Jiu-Jitsu (Judo) from Mitsuyo Maeda and opened the first Gracie Academy in 1925, with his brothers. His younger brother Hélio Gracie adapted those Asian techniques, developing the modern style of Jiu-Jitsu. Today, the Brazilian system of Jiu-Jitsu is widely recognized all around the world due to the courage, hard work, and sacrifice of Grandmasters Carlos and Hélio Gracie and their loyal followers. The difference in Jiu-Jitsu styles lies between Hélio Gracie’s Jiu-Jitsu strictly for self-defense and Sport (Gracie/Brazilian) Jiu-Jitsu developed for point competitions. As a student, make sure to verify the credentials, lineage, and background of your possible instructors, as well as the scenarios presented during a class in order to decide if you want to compete or learn the defensive and survival aspect of (Gracie/Brazilian) Jiu-Jitsu.
