Is there a difference between four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive?

4 Wheel Drive means that you have torque on all 4 wheels, but they are driven together, the Front 2 are tied together, the back 2 are tied together. All Wheel Drive is when you have 4 independently driven wheels each with their own application of force and torque. I’m no mechanic, but that is my understanding.
