Yes. BofA is the worst. They have more hidden fees. When I had WaMu, I’d get bogus magazine charges directly on my bank statements each month from their affiliates. As for checks and debit cards: When you open a checking account, you have to purchase checks. They are not free. However, they will usually give you the first batch of checks for free if you ask and aren’t using a promotion. You will also have the option of getting a debit card. This will enable you to use this card as a “plastic check” you never have to write on, and the funds are immediatly withdrawn from your checking account. However, you also have the option to make your debit card FDIC insured, and make it a Visa or Mastercard debit card. This is at no extra charge, but it gives you all sorts of protection against fraudulent purchases. Also, when used, the funds don’t withdraw immediatly from your account.
