Is there a difference between an internship, work placement, sandwich placement, vacation programme and work experience?
The terminology is unclear so read the description of the placement carefully. We have used ‘internship’ to mean all varieties of placements. However a commitment to a particular career is usually expected for an internship whereas ‘work experience’ may be organised informally to try out an occupation. The word internship has come from the USA where many students do placements to gain academic credit as well as experience. Credit internships tend to be formal arrangements, with a contract between the university, the organisation and the student. Few internships in the UK are for course credit.
