Is there a cure for steatocystoma multiplex?

0

Q : I have small lumps all over my body and was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called steatocystoma multiplex although no one else in the family has it. I read up and it seems that only surgery could remove it, leading to lifetime scarring. Please advise whether there is a cure to it. Response by Dr Chris Foo, Specialist in Dermatology, Raffles Hospital You are right that steatocystoma multiplex is a genetic disorder and it is transmitted in an autosomal dominant manner, meaning there is a 50% chance of a child from the next generation getting it. However, it may not show up in some individuals because severity varies. The small lumps are actually cysts containing sebum or oil, and the good news is it is a condition that affects the skin only. There are unfortunately no creams that can help. Occasionally antibiotics may be necessary if inflammation occurs. The only treatment available currently is surgical removal of the cysts, whilst for cysts on the face where cosmesis is an issue
