Ameraucana is the correct name for the easter egg chicken. They have several traits they must posses including the blue egg gene. Eggs can be red, green, blue. Sometimes they come out brown or white. Other chickens may be refered to as easter egg chickens and posses the blue egg gene but may not qualify as a Ameraucana. Although all chickens are related to all chickens, Ameraucanas weren’t bred from Araucanas and Araucanas weren’t bred from Ameraucanas. Both breeds were bred or developed from the non-standard Easter Eggers mated to other chickens. The APA officially accepted Ameraucana as standard breeds in 1984.
