Van Morrison is one of my favorite artists, has been for a very long time. I love the way that he turns his voice into a musical instrument. And one of my favorite songs by Morrison is “Coney Island.” It’s really a poem set to music but it has many of the themes you find in his other songs: a longing for the past, intimacy, an appreciation for the land of Ireland, a touch of wonder at all the world around him, and a soulfulness.
