is there a basic formula for sizing the plumbing on any given job, Residential and/or commercial?
That would depend on your state of residence and what plumbing code is in effect. A general standard of thumb is no less that 1/2″ piping to any one fixture and no less than 3/4″ piping from the supply at the meter or pressure tank. It is very important to check local codes though, as there are many factors that determine the size of piping depending on available pressure, total developed length (distance in feet from the water meter or pressure tank to the last fixture on the piping run) and friction loss (the loss of pressure due to changes of direction in the piping system).
