Is the worlds most rarest blood type bombay blood?
It’s hard to say what the ‘rarest’ blood type is, mostly because the ABO system isn’t the only typing system out there related to transfusion compatability. In the ABO system, ‘Bombay Blood’ is the rarest at only .0004% of the population. The ABO system is composed of antigens related to H antigen. A and B are components of H and O is the whole H antigen. Bombay blood is the complete absence of the partial A and B or the whole H antigens. As a result, Bombay Blood can be given to any member of the ABO system provided other systems don’t exclude them. However, those with Bombay Blood can only receive Bombay Blood, so sometimes they’ll have their own supply of blood stored for emergencies.
