The only reason that 2012 is regarded as a possible major event on the planet is becasue the mayan calendar end on the winter solstice in 2012. They have been incredably accurate with their dating techniques and nobody can explain why it just stops.

The only significant event that will happen at the winter solstice in 2012 is that our sun will be temporarily aligned with the galactic equator. That’s happened countless times in the past without any effect whatsoever on Earth or the solar system.
