Contrary to popular opinion VW Golfs (Mk 3 and 4) are not as reliable as they’re made out to be. Glad to hear your going for the 1.6 though as the 1.4 is underpowered. The 1.6 mk4 golf will give you no more or less hassle than its Ford or Vauxhall equivalent, but should retain its future value a lot better. It’s not as reliable as some of its VW family are, but if you like it and are happy to accept that you may have to put your hand in your pocket now and again then I’d say go for it. If you dont buy it, every time you see one you’ll be thinking “I wish I’d bought one of those”. Good luck with your new car, whatever you decide. EDIT: Spannermonkey is spot on.
