Is the volcano Grimsvotn located on a hot spot, convergent, or divergent boundary?
Grímsvötn volcano sits on top of the Icelandic hot-spot formed by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent plate boundary, on the Atlantic Ocean floor. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is formed by the North American and the Eurasian plates, slowly moving away from one another (divergence). Lava from beneath the Earth’s crust wells up to the surface of the ocean floor to fill the gap. Unfortunately for Iceland, it still sits right on top of this ridge.
