The Union flag is indeed the flag for the United Kingdom. The United Kindom is just an abrieviation of “The United Kingdom of Great Britain”, so they are one and the same thing and just one flag. However, all the countries inside of the U.K have their own flags such as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It’s difficult these days to separate the UK as such from the Britain description. The Union Flag is commonly known as the Union Jack. A simplified version was introduced just after 1603 (James 1’s ascension to the English throne). The flag was only initially meant for sea use. In 1707 following the formation of the UK it was adopted by both Scotland and England as the national flag as opposed to their own national banners. When Ireland joined the UK in 1801 the Union Flag as we know it today was created. No separate recognition of Wales as it was annexed by Edward 1 in 1282 and considered to be part of the Kingdom of England. It should be noted – that in 1908 whilst Parliament stated that the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag, no law has actually ever been passed to grant it such status.
