Is The U.S. Self Importance Clouding Our Judgement of Software?

Americans feeling a sense of entitlement is no where near diminishing. My neighbor asked me to help him install his Office 2007 on his netbook (technically illegal as it was already on his desktop and another laptop). I offered OOo, but he resisted persistantly saying that he should be able to install the software on all of his computers since he paid $350 for it. According to that logic, something free is not good enough and something you pay big $ for should give you the right to pirate it (at least within your home). MS Office regularly (re)registers itself with M$, possibly spying on me and likely collecting info about me, has a super large footprint, and is not compatible with nonM$ formats. I can’t for the life of me figure out why someone prefers MSO to OOo. How to I take my software? Just straight Open Source please. Last, with Windows and MSO, my internet connection lights used to flash a lot, assumingly telling M$ things about me and my PC. Linux only connects when I want it
