John Berkman: A huge amount of animal research is simply unnecessary and probably doesn’t even rise to being a significant moral question. I am willing to say that there could be situations in which animal experimentation could be justified, but I think the burden of proof, and it would be a significant burden, would be on those who want to say that this is sufficiently important and necessary for it to go on. If we could simply stop the obviously wrong animal testing we would be so far ahead. For example, in the United States there’s all kinds of very out-dated regulations in government that require animal testing on a variety of new products.
