Is the Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t XRF analyzer acceptable for CPSC requirements?
• Yes, if the coating sample size is equal to or less than 1 cm2, or weighs less than 10 mg total. • Yes, until February, 2010 for self-screened items, during what CPSC has called “a window of opportunity” to use XRF. For the period after February 2010, we expect CPSC will provide additional guidance on how XRF can be used for screening and/or testing. • Maybe, for independent labs. Acceptability depends on the labs’ qualifications, including ELPAT, AIHA, and A2LA. • The CPSC currently uses 14 Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t XRF analyzers to screen consumer products as they arrive in the U.S. and in their lab.
