Is the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) required?
The TOEFL is required unless you meet the following criteria: you have completed your Bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution in the United States or your native language is English; you were initially educated in Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, South Africa, Trinidad, or the UK; and language of instruction and textbooks was English. Preference will be given to applicants with a score of 600 or greater on the written test; 250 or greater on the computer-based test; and 100 or greater on the IBT.
Generally, this is required for applicants whose native language is not English. a) For the Masters degree associated with MIT, the TOEFL requirement is decided by the MIT department hosting the programme. Please refer to the MIT website: http://web.mit.edu/admissions/graduate/how_to_apply/pdf_download.html for the specific requirements of each host department. b) For non-dual degrees, the minimum TOEFL requirement is 580 (paper-based) or 237 (computer-based). Students are generally encouraged to take the tests but can request for a waiver in the following instances: – those who have received instruction in English in their primary and secondary schools. – those who have been in an English speaking country for four years or longer. – those who have received their degrees from American, British, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand universities. – those who have received their degrees from NUS or NTU.
