Is the term Politically correct just another way of saying good mannered?

The PC movement started with the best of intentions. It made the majority of us aware of the sensitivity of others, something that can never be a bad thing. However, it has been taken to ludicrous extremes, and all too often is an excuse for ultra liberal types to publicly demonstrate just how sensitive they are, as in all the cases about renaming Christmas to Winterval or some other nonsense. As an atheist I have no emotional attachment to Christmas, but even to me this is one of the many obvious signs that PC and cultural sensitivity has gone way too far. Sometimes it reminds me of the thought police of George Orwell’s 1984; now there’s an attractive image! The PC movement has also attracted some disaffected minority members, as a way of exerting some influence. However, it should be remembered that none of us has the right to not be offended.
