Is the strawberry poison dart frog an endangered species?
Currently, the strawberry poison frog is listed as Least Concern in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. (16) The rationale for that is that it has a “wide distribution, tolerance of a degree of habitat modification, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category.” (17) In other words, it means that this species, though under a certain degree of pressure, is not immediately threatened with a rapid decline or even extinction, like some other species of frogs. Still, according to the IUCN the main current threats to this species are the habitat loss and over-collection for the pet trade. That is why there is a strong need for their sustainable harvesting. Tourism poses an additional threat to distinct island forms of these frogs and needs to be addressed as well. (18) Not surprisingly, the IUCN also highlights the need to conduct more research into the life of these frogs, specifically in the area
