Is the staff trained specifically to care for patients with Alzheimers and other related dementias?
A large number of HRC staff have been trained by the Alzheimer’s Association and are now certified dementia care trainers. They, in turn, have provided 12 hours of Alzheimer’s Association training to all direct care staff, including an overview of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, dealing with behavioral issues, communicating with residents who have difficulty expressing needs, assisting with activities of daily living, and family issues, among others. All indirect staff (e.g., Housekeeping, Dietary, Kitchen) received training. Staff will be recertified every two years. The goal of this training is to teach the staff to be more understanding and responsive to the challenging behaviors associated with the disease. Who lives on the unit? The Special Care Unit is housed on two floors of Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. One floor is for residents who are ambulatory and experiencing mid- to late-stage dementia, while the second floor is for residents who are no longer able to independently mov
