Is the SS United States seaworthy?

The United States is currently the only floating “place” on the National Registry of Historic Places. Her hull is water-tight and her engines were carefully placed into storage when she was retired. While the technical answer to this question is “yes”, it would take a great deal of work and money to put the ship back to sea. With the price of oil many times greater than when she was launched it is not feasible to re-commission the ship. Current safety regulations would also require such massive modifications as to leave little of the original ship unaltered.
