Is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul an organization within the Catholic Church?
The Society is an independent organization. It is an incorporated international Catholic lay organization with its own Rule, set of by-laws and procedures. While the Society can only operate in a diocese with the Bishops permission, it is not an organization of the Church. The Society of Altoona-Johnstown is greatly appreciative of the support given to us by past Bishop James Hogan and present Bishop Joseph Adamec. Do you have to be Catholic to join the Society? No. The Society is organized under a Diocesan Council, District Councils and parish based Conferences. The Society also operates what are called Special Works, food kitchens, food pantries, emergency financial aid programs and thrift stores. All those wishing to serve the needy can be a part of a Conference or an SVDP volunteer at any of our special works.
