Is the shark tracking in real time?
As wonderful as it would be for us to follow sharks in real time, this is not how the tagging process works. A tag remains on a shark for anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the type of tag used by the research team, and eventually pops off. Once the tag resurfaces, that is when the data is transmitted and we receive the tracking information. It then can take several weeks to a few months for this scientific data to be translated into an easy-to-follow map. Once the map and/or expedition logs are available for each shark, we can post the information on our site.
