The seventh-day Sabbath is of vital important for a Christian because it is one of the Ten Commandments of God which He has set as a standard of our consecration to Him. Conformity to the Law is an achievement of the grace of God who, through Christ, delivers us from the bondage of sin and “sin is the transgression of the law” (1John 3:4). Keeping the commandments (and hence the Sabbath) is an outworking of the love God awakens in our hearts toward Him and further invites His mercy toward us (Exodus 20:6). Each of the commandments (and hence the Sabbath) is a specific expression of the royal law of love for God and man (Matthew 22:37-40; cf. Romans13:8). Each is a criterion of that manner of life which love to God and to our neighbour dictates. God is holy, just, and good.
