Is the Scottish National Party a centre-left nationalist political party committed to Scottish Independence?
Stating that somebody cannot be a “centre-left” party but allow monarchy is poorly thought through. I would say my calues lean towards the left wing. Just because I have a left wing perspective on most things, when it comes to the monarchy, I support our queen and indeed the notion of having a queen. To say “You can’t be left wing if you support the queen” then how do you explain all left wing politicians in all home nations that have to take a pledge of Allegiance to the queen.
Yes. The SNP would like independence, and leans towards being anti-monarchy. The thrones of England and Scotland were unified when a Scottish king came to inherit them both simultaneously. This has continued, and now the monarchy is virtually Saxon but still with an unbroken line to the Scottish throne. The SNP would prefer to win a referendum on independence, and knows that to try and ditch monarchy is a thorny prospect which makes many people uneasy who would otherwise be supportive. RE your comments: Alex Salmond is correct in his quote- he has obligations of office above and beyond his party political motivations so this should not surprise you. It would be quite a thing for Scotland to renounce its royal heritage. It is common in electoral politics for a party to have to go further to the middle ground than the core or extreme support are comfortable (as in your case).
