I’m not entirely sure of the ins and outs of the University system in England but I do know that an English honours degree takes 3 years whereas a Scottish honours degree takes 4 years. I have heard that this is because students in Scotland can start University as young as 17, which is a year younger than the rest of the UK (Scottish Highers are taken at age 17, whereas I believe A levels are taken at 18?) Also, in some of the ancient Scottish Universities, such as Aberdeen etc, a BA degree is known as an MA. This is not to be confused with a postgraduate MA. An English BA and a Scottish undergraduate MA are the pretty much the same degree. I believe most Scottish Uni’s have 2 main semseters; Sept-Dec and Jan-June. A full time year of study is 120 credits. An honours degree is awarded after 4 years of study, only an ‘Ordinary Degree’ is awarded after 3 years.
