Is the school mainly oriented towards long stays, i.e. do they object to someone (who doesn speak Chinese and is no good at Tai Chi) popping in for a week or so?

You are welcome to stay there for as long as you want, or as short as you want. A week or so is a good amount of time for a first visit. Everyone, when they fist get there, falls into the “no good at Tai Chi” category.
