Is the school district obligated to train substitute teachers and aides to operate assistive technology devices?
If the assistive technology device is vital to the student’s daily special education program, it is not reasonable for the student not to be able to use the device for long periods of time because a substitute is teaching the class. If the substitute is only going to be in the classroom for a day or two, it is probably not necessary to provide elaborate training. However, if the substitute is going to be in the classroom for an extended time, training should be provided.
