Is the role of CFMS personnel likely to be better understood as a result of the recent changes to the Universality of Service policy and the new Generic Task Statement?
We think so. The main reasons for this are: • In accordance with the CF accommodation policy, a member who does not satisfy the Universality of Service principle will no longer be automatically released from the service. Therefore, when a CF member decides to see an MO for a serious or permanent medical condition, it will not necessarily mean the end of his/her military career. • The member and the MO will not have to complete and sign a “form” – the old Generic Task Statement – to state almost officially that there is no other option but to release this member. • While CFMS personnel, particularly medical officers, will still have to make important and difficult decisions in recommending or approving employment limitations, there will be a new emphasis on what has been and should continue to be their essential role: to provide CF members with the best health care services.
