This answer is quite complicated. If it is stored in stock with no ammo in the magazine there are several states where you can carry in the passenger compartment. Other states such as NM you do not even need it disassembled. Some states it can not be accessible to anyone in the car period. The NRA has a site to study about what is required for each state. My AR-7 had no way to lock the stock closed so it would not be legal in many states that require a lockable case. I heard that someone had made a new stock with locking waterproof cap that would be legal but I have never seen one.
