Is the rate of infection among women increasing?
Yes, the rate of female infection has risen dramatically in the last two decades. An estimated 48% of all adults living with HIV are women, up from 35% in 1985. Globally, this trend is most evident among young women who are 2.5 times more likely to be infected than their male counterparts. In the regions hardest hit by the epidemic, young women have infection rates up to 6 times as high as their male peer.
