Is the quality of sound better on a mp3 player rather than a cd walkman?

A CD is 44.1KHz, 16 Bit uncompressed audio and is the optimum sound quality consumers currently get. MP3/MP4/WMA etc are compressed versions of the CD version. To create such a small file compared to a CD requires ignoring certain aspects of the sound spectrum. An MP3 ignores frequencies that the human ear can’t really process and then compresses the rest. Just as an example a 3 minute tune at CD quality (Wav/Aiff) would be 30Mb in size, whereas the same MP3 would be 3Mb – A tenth of the file size. Obviously it all depends on what bit rate your MP3’s are!128KBPS should be the lowest you would go for music, but ideally 192Kbps, and even better is to use MP4. To be honest though without good headphones you won’t notice alot of difference from a CD to a decent quality MP3, and for ease of use and portability of your music library an MP3 player wins every time compared to a CD.
