The Protective Mat is not absolutely necessary, but it provides a more stable and quiet ride. Also, without the Protective Mat, wind and vibration can rub the dirt that collects between the roof and the carrier, scratching the roof’s finish. Due to the extra friction provided by the Protective Mat, only slight strap tension is needed to keep the carrier stationary during travel.
