It is illegal to download music for free online, it doesnt matter if you pay for limewire, youre not paying for the music. limewire get round the legalities by warning you that they dont have the licence for the file and asking if you still want to download it, that way its then your responsibility.

Limewire is not illegal but you using it to download is illegal. Crazy but true.

Limewire is a peer to peer program, also known as a file sharing program. Using it to download music isn’t Illegal, if the file that you download has a legal source, such as being ripped from a CD to a computer. Really all you’re doing is just taking the files from other peoples computers, with their consent. You can just never be sure if the file has been legally downloaded :). People can never really tell if the file is legal anyway.
