Is the Pledge of Allegiance, established in 1954, a founding fathers document?
No. The Pledge of Allegiance had its language amended in 1954. The phrase “under God” was added by Act of Congress in reaction to the high numbers of American POWs who had collaborated or cooperated with their North Korean and Chinese captors during the Korean conflict. Since the Eisenhower administration had two brothers serving as Secretary of State and Director of Central Intelligence who considered communism to be a “Godless” ideology, the impetus was there to amend the pledge. Nevada took a different approach. They required completion of courses in American or Nevada history before receiving a college degree. They felt the reason for all of that collaboration was the ignorance of our history and our State documents. Like the ignorance of those who cannot believe we are a republic.
