It boasts the strongest field of the year, it has a growing and rich history, a huge prize fund, it identifies great champions and it’s played over the same course each year – one that has become a firm favourite with fans and players alike. But the answer has to be an unequivocal no. The Players can’t be regarded as a major because to have another one would dilute the validity of the other four (The Masters, US Open, Open and USPGA) and they remain the tournaments by which careers are measured.
