Is the Phantom Grip a viable conversion?
Yes and no. The jury is still out on this one. While it’s clear that it will help you with your launch, and can get both wheels spinning, the reliablility of this limited slip conversion is questionable at best. It is well known for blowing transmission in the Honda and Nissan camp. The Phantom Grip uses spring type pressure on the spyder gears to help both front wheels turn at the same time. The factory differential is an “open” differential, meaning that only one wheel will spin… whichever has the least traction. The best option is the Quaife true limited slip differential. However, one will pay up to $1800 for this. It’s true beautify will be found in the turns, where it is a torque biasing differential. Essentially, power will go to the outside wheel in a corner, preventing the one tire fire common to FWD cars with any sort of power.
