Is the panel aware of important medical exposures that have not yet been reported in the scientific literature?
The Panel described several procedures that may put a patient at increased risk of exposure to DEHP which were either not mentioned or not fully described in the MDB report, and which they thought needed attention in future deliberations. They are listed below: • ECMO: see earlier discussion (study of short-term high levels of exposure); • Hemodialysis: see earlier discussion (study of long-term chronic lower level exposures); • TPN and other IV therapy: although exposure levels are known for TPN, it is not known whether there is any relationship with common side effects of TPN. This is particularly relevant for young patients including newborns; • Medical practices such as thawing or heating solutions in a microwave or other warming device (heated closets); • Intrauterine transfusions; • Platelet transfusions (now considered not relevant as we have subsequently confirmed TEHTM is the plasticizer used in the special bags for these); • Peritoneal dialysis (TOTM – see above — is the pla
