The Gold Medal was solid gold up until the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. After that time, Gold Medals have been merely gold-plated. The exterior is covered with pure gold, but the interior is not. I’m not 100% sure, but if my memory is correct, the interior of the Gold Medal is (or used to be) made of silver.
