Is the Next West Big Enough for Double Wides and Double Talls?
By: DOUG NOONAN; Special to the Times BOZEMAN, Mont. – Welcome to Montana. The “Big Sky” state. The “last best place.” Both monikers are true and false. Montana is indeed the last best place, especially if you like icy, windswept desolation at high altitudes. It is also nice if you like blue-ribbon trout streams and clean, clear air. On the other hand, Montana is no better and no worse than anywhere else. Tradeoffs are reality. Take harsh winters along with safe neighborhoods. The misnomer “Big Sky” fixates me even more. It has been my observation that Montana’s sky is much smaller than anywhere else’s. At least in the western half of the state, where most of the people are, massive mountains dominate the scenery. The colossal Rocky Mountains stretch into the sky, posing a formidable barrier to wildlife, interstate highways and visibility of that “big sky.” The Crazy Mountains, Spanish Peaks and others are winning the war against the skyline here.
