Is the New SAT harder than the old SAT?
It is longer, but the concept of “harder” or “easier” does not really apply to a normed test like the SAT. The College Board has kept enough of the test intact that the new Math and Critical Reading scores are directly equivalent to the old Math and Verbal scores. Obviously there was no Writing component on the old SAT, so that score is new. Whether you are taking the old SAT, the New SAT, the Subject Tests, or the ACT, college admissions officers are not comparing you against some imaginary standard. You are judged relative to your fellow applicants. For the class of 2006 and beyond, the New SAT (and the ACT) will be the common measuring stick. Of course if you are terrible at grammar or weaker than your peers at the new math topics on the New SAT, then it is a small comfort that the overall difficulty of the SAT will be unchanged.
